Harkness turned history into magic with her acclaimed All Souls Trilogy, which featured the historian and witch, Diana Bishop, and the vampire scientist, Matthew Clairmont. Her latest novel returns to their universe to launch a new series based on some of the supporting cast. The narrative opens in 18th-century New England, where Matthew de Clermont, heir to an aristocratic family, gives Marcus, a young Massachusetts surgeon, the chance to become immortal. Marcus’s transformation into a vampire, with its Old World trappings, is complicated by his revolutionary ideals, but he is still alive in the 21st century, where he passes on the gift of eternal life to Phoebe, a Sotheby’s staffer he falls in love with. She, too, undergoes a difficult transition, one that reawakens Marcus’s old demons and tests the couple’s devotion.
This event is free to attend with no reservation required. Seating is available on a first come, first served basis.
